How to Get Your Kids Out of Shorts When Summer is Over

Kids love the carefree comfort of wearing shorts all summer. They like them so much it can be difficult to get them out of shorts when the chilly fall season arrives. Kids tend to want  to wear shorts until the first snowfall but they wind up catching a cold long before that happens. You want to protect their health and ensure they are properly dressed for the weather. How can you get them to ditch the shorts and face the fall?

Break them in slowly. Encourage your daughter to wear skorts, then longer skirts and finally a favorite pair of jeans. It might take a week or so to get them into wearing warmer clothes. It also helps to go shopping online or at the store to help them find a few fashion-forward pieces they can't wait to wear.

Boys might be more difficult since they like to play sports. Wean them into wearing longer shorts then invest in couple of pair of light cotton pants to pair with long-sleeved tees. Encourage them to wear nylon sweatpants and then get them into a pair of jeans. Make sure boys and girls have a couple of warm fleece sweatshirts to toss on for chilly days. Hoodies are a popular choice, especially if they have a designer name or ironic saying on the front.

How to Stay Warm in Dress Clothes During the Fall

The sultry days of summer are over but you're not ready to get rid of your sleeveless maxi dresses yet. Unfortunately, wearing them seems unlikely when you face a chilly fall evening. You can still slip into your favorite sexy evening dress without getting a cold. Find a sensational cover-up to wear when you go out to parties and dinners.

A bolero is a short jacket with long sleeves. A bolero is  particularly flattering when you wear an evening dress with a high waist. It can also add dimension and a definitive waistline to a free flowing dress. These short jackets are ideal as the summer turns into fall.

Another option is a slub cotton cardigan. These are ideal as we head into October and feel more of a chill in the air. The cotton is see-through for a seductive look that doesn't detract from your alluring evening dress. Cotton is warm but breathes so you feel comfortable.

When the evenings get a bit nippy, slip into a fancy shawl. Choose from loosely knit or crocheted designs in a rainbow of colors. You can even dress up your look with a shawl made with glittering metallic threads.

Keeping Your Kids Cool in the Summer

When it comes to cool, kids know all about it. The only exception is trying to beat the summer heat. Warm weather is right around the corner and hot kids become fussy ones. Your children can dress their best and still be ready for any summer fun that comes up. Casual outfits should be able to go from the beach to garden parties without making kids feel anxious about their clothes.

- Choose cotton outfits that breathe. Polyester can get hot in the steamy spring and summer months. Boys look great in colorful cotton tees, polos and shorts. Girls can wear a lightweight summer dress with a pair of thin cotton shorts underneath so they can run and play with ease. Skorts are also a pretty choice for little girls.

- Stay away from dark colors. Hues such as navy, black and dark brown tend to hold the heat. Choose pale blues, light yellows and white for the summer. Keep plenty of all-color bleach on hand to do laundry. Soak spots before washing your kids' clothes.

- Let kids have a choice. Choosing your kids clothes often wise but let them select one or two outfits of their own. They are sure to like these choices and want to wear them through the summer. That makes getting dressed in the morning easier!

Warmer Weather Means Less Clothing

As the warm weather starts during the beginning of April and end of May, thoughts start to turn to summer parties and fewer clothes. A sheer maxi dress or a short cocktail dress are cool ways to look pretty as the steamy weather starts. If your figure is not quite what you want to be, these few suggestions can help you get in shape:

- Cut your portion sizes in half. Sometimes it is difficult to follow a diet. Simply cut all your portion sizes in half. Eating less means losing weight. Just 10 pounds can make a big difference in how you look and feel.

- Choose cocktails wisely. Those creamy concoctions might be tempting but they also have a lot of calories. Try a white wine spritzer, rum and diet cola or vodka and tonic with the twist of lime instead. They are refreshing with fewer calories.

- Steer clear of truffles and milk chocolates. While they are alluring, have a square of dark chocolate to fulfill your cravings. Keep away from cakes, cookies and pies as well a salty snacks such as potato chips. If you have to nosh reach for salt-free pretzels, carrots or celery.

- Add fruits and water to your daily diet. When you think you're hungry, grab a glass of water or piece of fruit. Most of the time you won't want to eat anything else.

In just a couple of weeks, you'll be ready to shop for a couple of fun summer cocktail dresses. Appreciate the body you have at the moment and take your measurements to ensure the perfect fit. When a dress is too tight or too loose, it can make you look heavier.

Updating Your Wardrobe and Home for Spring

It's time to open the doors and window of your home and clean out your closets for spring. It's the perfect season to throw away the old and invite in the new. Here are a few simple tips to make your wardrobe and home ready for spring.

Throw out clothing that doesn't fit or that you have not worn in over a year. Has that dress been sitting in your closet for three years and you still don't wear it? Are your kids' closets clogged with clothes they outgrew last year? Bag them up and get rid of them. Donate them to someone who needs them if they are in good condition. An overcrowded closet is confusing.

Measure yourself and your kids. Measure around the thickest portion of your waist, chest and hips. Measure your kids' height on a growth chart. Knowing your measurements makes it easier to shop for new clothes that fit properly.

Toss out dark and dingy items. Is your house cluttering with dusty brick-a-brack or old items that look dingy? Get rid of them and add a few scented candles or updated items. Have more clear spaces so your house doesn't look cluttered.

Add color to your life. Plant a garden, buy pastel clothing and add light-colored household accents. Spring is here and it's time to lighten it up!
